A grand Reception to celebrate Africa Day's 47th Anniversary was organized by the African diplomatic missions in New Delhi in cooperation with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on May 26, 2010 in New Delhi.

The chief guest on the occasion was Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister of Human Resource Development. Ministry of External Affairs was represented by Secretary (West) Shri Vivek Katju, Joint Secretary (East and Southern Africa) Shri Gurjeet Singh and Joint Secretary (West Africa) Dr. Ausaf Sayeed. All the heads of diplomatic missions from Africa were present in large numbers along with representatives from friendly countries. Institutes and organizations dealing with Africa were in attendance as were journalists. Indian companies doing business in that continent turned out in huge numbers.

Dean of the African Heads of Mission Mr. Francois Balumuene Nkuna made his opening remarks before OIA Chairman, Ambassador V.B. Soni was invited to deliver his words of welcome. Through his brief intervention about the various steps taken to forge closer economic/trade ties, he said that the bonding between the two sides is getting even closer. While greeting them on the momentous occasion he said that the evening was for increasing social interaction, rejoicing, increasing our special affinity.

Minister Shri Kapil Sibal in his speech brought out the commonalities between India and the African continent and how India is committed to sharing its experience gained during its struggle in the march towards becoming an economic power to be reckoned with. India would like to increase its contribution to Africa's human resource development, capacity building, transfer of appropriate technology as partners and brothers. His vision statement drew instant applause from the audience.

Dean of Diplomatic Corp Mr. Jonathan Wutawunashe in his concluding remarks brought the house down when he remarked that the last three Deans of Diplomatic Corps have been all from Africa because of their terms of duty here were extended indicating the African countries desire to ‘stick' with India!
